The first book ended with the contradictory episode, when Ana finally gave up to Christian, a deviated personality, and went down to finally playing his dirty games. Apparently, he went too far by beating her with a belt, and she got really scared and left him. Their hearts are broken, but they still miss each other like crazy, so, their relations are resuming its natural course. The couple decides to start over with no rules this time and Ana feels very happy about that. So does Christian, though he has never experienced a romantic side of love, but he does his best to please Ana and make her feel secure with him. Their love grows, as well as their trust to each other.
Through the book, we see how the main characters open up and reveal their new sides, as well as some secrets. Speaking about Miss Steele, I must admit, that she becomes more confident, has the positive influence on Christian, but at the same time, she takes after him too. Ana has enough courage to come athwart him, becomes more initiative in seduction, as well as more stubborn in making decisions. The impressive episode, when Ana had a fight with Mrs. Robinson, irrevocably changes our perception of this character. It seems, like they are trading places, because now Anastasia is the one, who induces playing games and going back to the red room of pain, where the story went bad the last time. However, sometimes it’s hard not to hate her, because even when Christian is the nicest, most enduring and loving, she keeps on digging to find what’s wrong with him. On the other side, Mr. Grey’s character reveals some of his secrets. We learn that his mother was a prostitute and she never defeated him, when the pimp of hers beat baby Christian up and crushed cigarettes on his body. That’s where we find out about the main male character’s scarves and haphephobia. During one scene, Ana draws a map on his body, highlighting the forbidden areas with the red lipstick. Though, some time after, Christian lets her touch even those places, which convinces us that he trusts her completely. Although in one of the scenes Grey says that he’s a sadist, we clearly see that he is just lost and have no idea how to have normal relations and understanding of how he can be loved, as the result of his childhood trauma. Playing piano after he was adopted helped him recover and adapt to the new normal reality. That’s where his sad piano performances in the middle of the night came from. Soon, Christian provides us with another confession. His special taste regarding the choice of submissive arose from the image of his birth mother, which is exactly according to Freud.
In this part we get to know few characters that stand in a way of lovebirds’ happiness. The fist one is Christian’s insane ex-submissive – Leila, who chases Ana and even attempts to kill her. The second one – Mrs. Robinson, who tries to keep her great influence on Grey, convinced that Ana wants him only for money. In the end they have a huge fight, which arranged everything back to order. The third person is a mysterious man that shoots down Christian’s helicopter and is not going to stop on that…
Author plays with the concepts of depravity and perversion versus love and romance. She creates a narrative cocktail of emotions, which are hard to be divided into black and white. We may assume, that the title Fifty Shades Darker relates to Anastasia this time, as within the story we witness the parts of her soul becoming darker. The brightest moment is when Christian proposes to Ana, and there she faces a dilemma: one scale is marriage and another – sicko saddist. But the love takes over and she says “Yes”. So, as a whole, this book is much lighter, than the previous one, but it may be only calm before the storm.
